Santa and the Safety of Your Roof

Santa and His Reindeer

Santa comes and goes every year on December 24th and he always seems to do so without the slightest bit of damage to our roofs. WOW! But wait, does this mean that our roofs are  safe to walk on, and even put a sleigh on?!?

No, not at all! It’s vital to remember that Santa and his reindeer are magical. They are, after all, able to visit all of the world’s children in just one night.  Santa is even able to drop off presents under each tree without detection!

Knowing that he can do all of that, we at Monument are certain that he is also able to use his magic to land on roofs and not cause one bit of damage to it.

Foot Traffic

In all seriousness, foot traffic on a roof, especially a flat roof, is no joke. Serious damage can be caused by foot traffic on your flat or low slope roof! We all have to get on our roofs from time to time, so what should you do to prevent damage?

Here are some important precautions you can take to prevent foot traffic from causing damage to your roof.

  1. Install walk pads.

    1. This is one of the best ways to prevent damage from foot traffic. Installing walk pads in areas that contractors will need to access regularly will significantly help reduce the risk of damage from foot traffic.

  2. Keep your roof and gutters clear of debris.

    1. Debris on a flat roof can cause significant damage when a storm comes through, but did you know that damage can also be caused by foot traffic walking across a debris filled roof? It’s important to check your roof for debris often, and remove it to prevent damage.

  3. Warn contractors that get on your roof  to “Tread Lightly”

    1. Roofing contractors, HVAC techs, Cable techs, ect, all need access to your roof when there is an issue. Be sure to warn them about the type of roofing system that you have before they gain access to the roof.

  4. Limit Excessive Weight

    1. Your flat roof should not be used for storage. This puts excessive weight on the roofing systems and will cause it to break down over time.

Remember, when it comes to roof warranties, third party damage such as foot traffic is not covered by the warranty. Taking the precautions listed above will help to significantly lower your risk of damage from foot traffic.
